Anaemia
Anaemia is a condition that occurs when the body does not produce sufficient quantities of healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells transport oxygen to human tissues. This results in a reduction of oxygen delivery to your tissues and organs. You can experience weakness, exhaustion, and dyspnea.
Overview
This illness is marked by a decreased red blood cell count. If a blood test indicates that you have low haemoglobin, the primary protein found in red blood cells, you are diagnosed with this illness. Its primary job is to distribute oxygen throughout the body. Therefore, there is a reduction in oxygen in your essential organs or tissues when this protein level is low. You may experience shortness of breath, easy fatigability, and other symptoms from this condition.
Iron - deficiency anaemia: A common kind brought on by low iron levels, frequently as a result of pregnancy or blood loss. Manageable with iron supplements and a high-iron diet.
Sickle Cell Anaemia: An inherited condition that results in red blood cells with a crescent shape, which makes the blood stickier and reduces blood flow.
Normocytic Anaemia: Inadequate generation of normal-shaped red blood cells or long-term infections and illnesses cause this condition.
Hemolytic Anemia: Low haemoglobin due to red blood cell breakdown, increased catabolism, decreased synthesis, and increased bone marrow attempts are all symptoms of hemolytic anaemia.
Megaloblastic Anaemia: Is characterised by abnormally large and structurally malformed red blood cells called megaloblasts. It is primarily brought on by deficiencies in vitamin B12 or folic acid.
Pernicious anaemia: Megaloblastic anaemia caused by a vitamin B12 shortage is known as pernicious anaemia (PA), an autoimmune disorder that affects absorption because intrinsic components are lacking.
Fanconi Anaemia: An uncommon hereditary condition that affects the bone marrow and can cause leukaemia, severe birth abnormalities, and an inability to create different types of blood cells.
Causes
Anaemia can result from an acquired illness or be a congenital condition. Anaemia arises when the blood has an insufficient number of red blood cells.
Reduced generation of red blood cells is one of the causes. - Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most prevalent kind of anaemia. It happens when the body doesn't have enough iron.
In the event of pernicious anaemia, vitamin B12 is either completely absent from the diet or cannot be absorbed by the body.
Foods lack folate or folic acid, or the body cannot correctly use folic acid, causing anaemia from a folate deficiency.
Blood problems caused by genetics such as thalassemia or sickle cell anaemia.
Hemolytic anaemia is a condition caused by the breakdown of red blood cells.
Less hormones that do not make enough red blood cells are involved in chronic illnesses.
Blood loss is brought on by various medical disorders such as gastritis, ulcers, or haemorrhoids.
Other risk factors of Anaemia include,
Inadequate diet: A diet lacking in specific vitamins and minerals.
Digestive issues: Conditions affecting the small intestine's ability to absorb nutrition, such as Crohn's disease/celiac disease.
Menstruation: Iron deficiency anaemia is more common in menstruating women.
Pregnancy: lack of folic acid and iron during pregnancy causes anaemia.
Genetic factors: You are more likely to be anaemic if there is a family history of genetic anaemia, such as sickle cell anaemia.
Age: The risk of anaemia is higher in the elderly, especially those over 65.
Symptoms
Many forms of anaemia have some of the following symptoms:
Simple exhaustion and energy loss
Unusually fast heart rate, especially during physical activity
Breathing difficulties
Recurring headaches, especially after exercising
Inability to concentrate
Lightheadedness
Skin pallor
Leg cramps
Lack of sleep
Breathlessness
Hypotension in orthostatic posture
Aggressive behaviour
Reddish or cracked tongue
appetite decline
Unusual urges for food
