Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy, a common microvascular complication of diabetes, is the leading cause of visual loss. Diabetic retinopathy can cause retinal damage that could potentially result in blindness.
Overview
Uncontrolled diabetes can cause eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. The risk is influenced by age, diabetic duration, poor glycemic control, and blood pressure fluctuations. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) is an early stage where tiny blood vessels leak, making the retina swell. When the macula swells, it is called macular edema. While, proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) occurs when the retina grows new blood vessels, leading to neovascularization and macular edema.
