Lichen Planus

Lichen planus (LP) is a rash that appears on the skin and, less frequently, on the scalp, fingernails, toenails, and/or mucous membranes in the mouth or genital area. Lichen planus may be chronic or spontaneously disappear without medical intervention.

Overview

A chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease of the skin and mucous membranes is called lichen planus. It is typified by tiny polygonal lumps with flat tops that might combine to form rough, scaly skin plaques. Additionally, the mucous membranes that line the mouth and / or vagina may be affected. Lichen planus can affect people of any age, gender, color, or ethnicity. It is most frequent in individuals between the ages of 30 and 60, however, it is uncommon in younger children and older adults, while some individuals who have the disorder also have liver infections known as hepatitis C.

Causes

Lichen planus has no recognized cause. However, some of the following factors may contribute to the infection.

  • Patients with widespread lichen planus appear to have an increased risk of liver infection from the hepatitis C virus in some places.

  • Exposure to specific medications, dyes, and other substances (such as diuretics, antibiotics, gold, arsenic, iodides, chloroquine, quinacrine, and quinine)

Symptoms

The following are the most typical sites for lichen planus:

  • Inner wrists Front limbs Inner ankles legs below the Neck. Trunk. lips. Toenails and fingernails. Genitalia.

  • On the skin, lichen planus lesions manifest as solid regions larger than a thumbnail and as flat-topped, raised bumps called papules or plaques.

  • Lesions in lighter skin tones are frequently pink, crimson, or purple.

  • Lesions in darker skin tones are typically grey or dark purple.

  • The surface of these lumps may become dry and scaly, as lichen planus advances. Wispy, gray-to-white streaks known as Wickham's striae may appear. Skin lichen planus is typically irritating.

Ayurvedic View

Kitibha kushta- Here due to aggravated vata and kapha dosha, which settles in twak (skin), does dooshana (vitiation) of sapta dushya like rasa, lasika (lymph), udaka (water element) etc, resulting in shyavata (darkening) of skin, while touching its rough, and feels like a scar of wound, this is lichen planus. Ayurveda way of approach is to correct metabolism, bring dosha back to prakruta awastha (balance state), remove the scar marks and prevent the reoccurrence by ayuvedic panchakarma purification treatment and also help in improving the lost shine and beauty of the skin.
