Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common condition that can be caused by a variety of factors. The neck, also known as the cervical spine, is a network of nerves bones joints and muscles. It serves an important function in providing support and mobility for the head, but it can be painful at times with most people being affected at some point in their lives
Most neck pain goes away on its own after a few days. It is almost never a sign of something more serious.
Overview
There are several issues that can cause neck pain. Pain in the shoulder head arm and/or hand can result from irritation along nerve pathways in the neck. In addition, spinal cord irritation can cause pain in the legs and other areas below the neck. Neck pain usually goes away in a few days or weeks, but pain that lasts months may indicate an underlying medical condition that needs to be addressed. Early intervention may be required in some cases for the best results. Neck pain can range from a minor and easily ignored to excruciating pain interfering with daily activities like dressing concentrating or sleeping.
Neck pain can sometimes cause stiffness and a reduction in range of motion. Neck pain is commonly classified as follows in terms of duration:
Acute: Pain lasting less than four weeks. Subacute: Pain that lasts between 4 and 12 weeks.
Chronic: Pain that lasts three months or more. Neck pain can be sharp and concentrated in one area, or it can be milder and spread over a larger area. Sometimes, the pain refers to the head or is accompanied by a headache. It can also be accompanied by muscle spasms in the neck upper back or around the shoulders
Causes
The following are some of the most common causes of neck pain:
Poor posture (the position of your body when standing or sitting)
Sleeping in an inconvenient position
Muscle tensile stress
Injury from prolonged use of a desktop or laptop computer such as a muscle strain or whiplash
A slipped spinal disc (herniated disc) wear and tear in the bones of the neck, which is a normal part of aging spinal disc wear and tear (cervical spondylosis) This is also a normal part of the aging process.
Symptoms
Neck pain frequently spreads to the shoulders or upper back. It frequently causes headaches. The pain may be exacerbated if you keep your head in one position for an extended period of time, such as while working at a computer. Neck pain may be accompanied by muscle tightness or spasms. You may also find it difficult to move your head. You might additionally be experiencing the following problems if you have a neck injury:
Dizziness
Nausea (a feeling of being sick)
Numbness or pins and needles
Deterioration in your vision or hearing problems difficulty concentrating (dysphagia) swallowing
