Pernicious anaemia

Low levels of healthy red blood cells in the blood are known as anemia.

One cause of vitamin B12 deficiency anemia is pernicious anemia. It is believed to be mostly brought on by an autoimmune disease that prevents the production of intrinsic factors in the stomach.

This material is required for the small intestine to absorb dietary vitamin B12.

Overview

Pernicious anemia is a kind of vitamin B12 insufficiency caused by decreased absorption of the vitamin because the stomach lining does not manufacture an intrinsic factor (IF). The disorder is brought on by the body having insufficient amounts of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 maintains the integrity of nerve cells and aids in the production of red blood cells in the body. Animal foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk, and other dairy items are a rich source of this vitamin.

Causes

• Pernicious anemia has two causes: autoimmune and genetic, and It is common among people who also have other autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo or Addison's disease.

 • Pernicious anemia involves autoimmune inflammation in the stomach and the inability to absorb vitamin B12 in the small intestine.

• Pernicious anemia is more common in women over 60 than with a family history of the disorder

• While vitamin B12 deficiency anemia may be caused by a lack of vitamin B12 in the diet, pernicious anemia is caused by an inability to absorb vitamin B12.

Symptoms

Symptoms frequently start mildly and develop over time, but if left untreated, they may get worse. For instance, minor weariness could be the first indication. Additional indications of pernicious anemia may comprise the subsequent:

• Toxic anemia.

• Pale skin

• Arms and legs weakness

• Skin that prickles or tingles

• Breathing difficulties

• Lightheadedness

• Pounding heart rate

• Bloating in the abdomen

• The diarrhea

• Loss of weight

• Inflammation of the limbs

• darker Skin

• Unsteady equilibrium

• A decrease in general cognitive function and forgetfulness Long-term untreated pernicious anemia can exacerbate these cognitive issues, perhaps leading to dementia or psychosis. Under severe conditions, it can result in serious neurological issues and even death.

Ayurvedic View

Pandu (rasa kshaya and rakta kshaya)-Rasa is the first dhatu (body essential nutrient), that is formed after aahara pachana (digestion of food). Due to agni mandya (decreased digestion and absorption capacity) and due to follow of causes aggravating three doshas namely vata, pitta and kapha all results in depletion of rasa and rakta dhatu ,which causes symptoms of pernicious anaemia.Ayurveda way of approach is to correct jatara agni and dhatva agni (gross level and cellular level metabolism) thus increases digestion and absorption, increase saratva of dhatus by adopting ayurvedic treatment, healthy diet and life style.
