Polycystic Ovarian Disease (Pcod)

Polycystic ovary disorder (PCOD) or syndrome (PCOS), as used here, is a hormonal disease in women that causes irregular menstrual cycles. An ultrasound of a woman's lower abdomen may reveal a series of abnormally large eggs that resemble a string of pearls. PCOS may be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics. Even though this disease has been steadily increasing in recent years, it was first identified in 1721 in Italy.

Overview

Polycystic ovarian disease or PCOD for short is a long-term medical condition in which your two ovaries gradually produce immature or partially mature eggs, which build up to a significant quantity. These eventually develop into ovarian cysts, which enlarge the ovaries. Your ovaries release more male hormones as a result, which can lead to infertility abnormal weight gain irregular menstrual cycles, and hair loss.

Normally, each month, one of your ovaries releases fully developed fertile eggs. However, this mature egg release is eliminated when you have PCOD, and your ovaries will frequently release immature eggs. Furthermore, a person with PCOD produces excess amounts of androgen, a male hormone that is normally released in small amounts during each cycle.

Causes

PCOS and PCOD are two separate conditions that affect a woman's hormonal and reproductive health. Despite this, a lot of people confuse these terms or use them interchangeably. In actuality, despite certain similarities, they are two distinct conditions. PCOD or polycystic ovarian disease: is a long-term medical condition in which the two ovaries gradually produce immature or partially mature eggs, which can accumulate to a significant amount. These eventually develop into cysts in your ovaries, which increase their size.

Your ovaries release more male hormones as a result, which can lead to infertility abnormal weight gain irregular menstrual cycles, and hair loss. In normal circumstances, one of your ovaries produces fertile and mature eggs each month. However, this mature egg release is eliminated when you have PCOD, and your ovaries will frequently release immature eggs. Furthermore, while a person without PCOD normally releases very little androgen during each cycle this production is heavy in PCOD.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS: is a metabolic disorder that can impact women between the ages of 12 and 51 by causing an imbalance in hormones during their reproductive years. This dangerous medical condition is characterized by a cluster or collection of tiny fluid sacs on the outside of your ovaries that are called cysts. The cysts are filled with immature eggs known as follicles that do not release eggs regularly. This illness results in an excess of the male hormone androgens, which disrupts your menstrual cycle and causes irregular or absent periods for months. It also causes multiple hormonal imbalances.

Symptoms

A large number of women have PCOD and are unaware of it. To receive an early diagnosis of the illness it is critical to pay attention to these symptoms. PCOD symptoms include the following:

  • Inconsistent Periods: This is the most common symptom of PCOD and irregular or light periods are the first sign of the condition. Pay special attention to your monthly cycle to identify PCOD.

  • Excessive Hair Growth on the Face and Body: One of the main characteristics of hirsutism is the excessive growth of facial hair. In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the ovaries produce a high level of androgens, which are male hormones that can lead to increased hair growth in women.

  • Mood swings: The symptoms of PCOD include irregular periods and an imbalance of hormones in the body. Mood swings stem from an imbalance in hormones.

  • Acne: Hormone disruption from PCOD causes a range of facial problems including acne. The most prevalent sign of PCOD is acne. Some women with PCOD experience severe cystic acne.

  • Quick Weight Gain: Male hormones and insulin are produced in excess by the body in PCOD patients. This makes women gain weight more quickly. Lower abdominal fat buildup is a common symptom of PCOD.

  • Excessive Oiliness: Hormone imbalance also affects the skin. It causes acne by producing an excess of sebum.

  • Excessive Bleeding: The uterine wall thickens more as a result of irregular periods. Every time a woman gets her period this results in increased bleeding.

  • Hair Loss: Excessive hair loss and thinning are common in women with PCOD. Some women might experience total hair loss. This is due to a hormonal imbalance in the body.

  • Diabetes: Because of their higher insulin levels women with PCOD are more likely to develop diabetes.

  • Darkening of the Skin: Darkening of the skin around the neck or in the intimate areas is a common indication of PCOD.
