Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited retinal disorders causing progressive rod photoreceptor dysfunction, cone photoreceptor degeneration, and retinal pigment epithelium degeneration, resulting in visual impairment that usually manifests as night blindness and progressive visual field loss.

Symptoms

Retinitis pigmentosa typically begins in childhood with a loss of night vision and side vision. Over time, the field of vision narrows, resulting in tunnel vision. Other symptoms include sensitivity to bright light and loss of color vision. Most individuals lose both visions.

Ayurvedic View

Timira- It is drushti gata roga (means disease that affects the eye vision). When dosha namely vata, pitta and kapha along with vitiated rakta, reach patala of eye (layer of eye-retina) causes visual disturbance, this is retinitis pigmentosa. If this is not treated or corrected then it can cause loss of vision. Ayurveda way of approach is to correct the root cause of this disease, bring dosha back to balance, reduce symptoms by ayurvedic panchakarma treatment and special local treatment done for eyes, so as person vision is improved.
