Abhyangam

Ayurveda

Abhyangam is commonly known as Ayurvedic oil massage therapy and it is widely practiced. This therapy has to be performed by a trained Ayurveda therapist. Using specialized strokes and other therapy techniques, the head, palms, soles, and ears should be given importance and the therapy must be done carefully. However, it is not advised for people suffering from fever, obesity, indigestion, and diarrhea. It can be performed for newborn babies after 7 days of birth onwards.

How Abhyangam is Performed

Trained therapists conduct the Abhyangam procedure over a specially made wooden table (Droni). The choice of sesame oil treated with different herbs is determined by the doshic type of the individual. After evaluating this, an Ayurvedic doctor determines the right oils and precise course of treatment. After giving prayers, the therapeutic session starts. After applying some lukewarm oil, the body is treated in the seven postures that are stated below:
1. Sitting 2. Recline 3. Lateral right 4. Facing downward 5. Lateral to the left 6. Bending 7. Reclining Following the procedure, the patient is instructed to take a steam bath with herbal tea and then a hot shower.
