Tarpanam

Ayurveda

Tharpanam is a relaxing Ayurvedic therapy for the eyes. It involves deep cleansing of the eyes. According to Ayurveda, each of the five elements of nature governs a particular aspect of the eye: the earth element governs the muscle component, fire governs the blood vessels, air governs the color, water governs the white area, and air governs the tear ducts and channels. All of these components must work correctly and be in balance for optimal eye health.

Furthermore, Alochaka Pitta, a subdosha of Pitta, also governs our eyes. The Alochaka Pitta gets less balanced with age, which has an impact on eye health. As a result, it is crucial to focus on eye care throughout life. Maintaining healthy eyesight and vision throughout life can be facilitated by regular Tharpanam therapy.

How it is done?

A compartment is constructed around the eyes using  ground urad dal. The ring thus constructed keeps the medicinal ghee from leaking, allowing the eyes to get the most benefit from the warmth and nutrients.

The  medicinal ghee or oil with Brimhana Dravyas (nourishing medicaments), that is chosen based on the dosha is then filled in the compartment.

The patient is then instructed to open and softly blink his eyes at regular intervals throughout the therapy, and the medicinal ghee is kept in place for a predetermined amount of time. This enables the ghee or oil to penetrate the eyes and replenish their moisture.

To make sure the oil is appropriately absorbed into the body, fermentation may be administered here. To help the eyes rest, a bandage may also be placed over them at night and in between sessions.

Herbal decoctions are used to cleanse the eyes in order to remove pollutants that cause eye fatigue or blurred vision.
