Thalapothichil
Ayurveda
Thalapothichal / Shirolepanam "Shiro meaning head and ' Lepa' meaning paste, is a specialized ayurvedic therapy where herbs of high medicinal value are indigenously blended with buttermilk to make a paste that is liberally applied to cover the entire scalp. This cooling treatment is recommended for the Pitta Dosha in the Head
The procedure
Preparation: The person is made to sit in a comfortable position. Using a certain medicinal oil, the head is gently massaged
Making the paste: After carefully evaluating the patient's condition, a fresh herbal paste is made by boiling it with buttermilk.
Applying the paste: A thin layer of the paste, roughly 0.5 to 1 centimeter thick, is applied over the whole of the scalp. A small central portion of the crown is made into a groove.
Covering the scalp: The scalp is then covered with a plantain or lotus leaf, and secured with a cotton cloth known as varthi to keep the medication in place.
Standby time: The application is to remain for a duration of 45 to 60 minutes.
Removing the paste: The drug is taken out and the head is thoroughly cleaned with a fresh cloth.
Massaging the scalp: A gentle friction to the head is given.
The patient is allowed to relax, stay still, avoid activity, avoid bright light and wind, and sleep with their eyes closed and it's very important to avoid washing the head post-treatment.
The concept
According to Ayurveda, the scalp is an influential energy center called the "Adhipati Marma." Massaging this area stimulates the marma points, which are key energy connectors that control the passage of prana, or life force. The scalp is composed of five layers: skin, connective tissue, aponeurosis, loose areolar layer, and pericardium. The dense subcutaneous connective tissue has the best cutaneous blood supply in the body.
The cell membrane, which is composed of phospholipids, absorbs lipid-soluble medicinal extracts and allows them to enter the bloodstream. Since the medicated oil is applied to the scalp and a gentle massage is performed as part of the Abhyanga procedure before Thalapothichil, heat is produced and vasodilatation occurs, allowing the lipids in the medicated oil to absorb the active ingredients of the medicated paste that is applied to the scalp. This paste contains a variety of pharmacological actions, such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressants, and intellectual properties.
